The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

These boots are fantastic in person. I bought the cognac color, which is what is shown in the video, and it is gorgeous and soft. The heel is perfect. I am more accustomed to the flat Frye heels, but I found these every bit as comfortable. They look great with jeans and I love that they rise up a little higher on the outside than the inside. They fit the same as other Frye boots - order 1/2 size smaller than your usual shoe size. Highly recommended.

These boots look fantastic. Soft, supple and rugged. I love them but...after wearing them out for one day, they started cutting into my Achilles. For some reason, the heel support piece on the back of the boot, comes up unusually high. This is my 5th pair of Frye boots and I have never had this problem before. I am hoping it's a defect. Will return and try another pair. These really are beautiful boots and the cognac suede color is so rich.

I wanted boots that were unadorned, no buckles, with a lug sole, and I wanted a rounded toe, not the squared off harness boot toe. I wanted a leather boot that was dressier than Uggs but still casual and durable/comfortable enough for frequent wear. Had considered the Cavalry, which looks very nice, but had the square toe. Then found the Elena which fit all the requirements. I am between an 8 and 8.5 in other boots -- in these, the 8 fit. I like the pull-on (no zipper) and the heel height. They take a bit of a pull to get them on. The leather in the shaft is quite thick and stiff so the boots are not lightweight. But they are still quite comfortable. The shaft has a lot of room, especially at the top -- my calves are thin/normal and there is some space between the boot and my legs. But I wanted boots that I could get my straight jeans into comfortably. These have a bit of a cavalier or wellies look to them -- they are not form fitting. They're made in Mexico, not the US. Right now most Frye boots are made in Mexico -- only a few such as the Campus are still made in the US, and the new Campus are not like the old black label ones so I'm not sure it really matters. Zappos was great, as always -- quickly replaced the 8.5 with the 8 and then when the size 8 pair that I received had a defect, they quickly replaced with another pair, that I'm happily wearing now. Already wondering about may-be getting the suede ones too.

I'd also recommend: Ferragamo, Uggs

I love the lug sole on this--I have been dying to get a pair of Fryes with a lug sole, since I get tired of slipping around when the weather turns, and these are perfect in many ways. I found them to be a half size big, so I might try sizing down; I would also love a zipper, since I struggled to pull these on, even with the boot pulls inside. I also wish the heel was just a little higher--maybe 2 inches which is just enough lift while also being very comfortable. But the leather on these is rich and thick, so I might try again with a smaller size.

I own several pairs of Frye boots and these by far are the most comfortable. I thought they might prove difficult to get on and off like my Frye engineer boots, due to the stiff boot leg, but these are a dream. They pull on and off with ease. My legs are skinny so they do not hug your leg, but they give ample room to tuck in jeans. The suede is gorgeous. I wish I could wear them every day, but living in the Northeast, suede isn't as practical. But I wouldn't trade them for anything. I returned a pair of Donald Pliner boots for these and it was a smart move. These are made much better. Buy a pair, it will be a great purchase. True to size.

I'd also recommend: Ugg
