I first purchased the Frye Dorado Riding Boots in spice. When they arrived and I put them on my feet, I knew I was going to buy another pair. So, I ordered a pair in burgundy. When I’m out anywhere, people are either complimenting the boots or they’re staring at them. Having worked with leather and have made shoes and garments, I know good leather when I see and touch it. What I like about these boots is that they have a refined ruggedness both in appearance and in quality. They’re leather lined and very comfortable. If asked where I got them, I always refer them to Zappos.

I got this boot in the Spice leather and it is gorgeous, both in quality and color. After reading the other reviews stating the boot runs large, I ordered a size 8 (am usually an 8.5). The 8 was snug both in length and width-wise in the toe, but after taking them to get stretched, the fit is much better. I agree with the other reviewers that the heel slips, but with a boot this beautiful, that can be overlooked. Not the most comfortable of boots initially, but they are beautiful and hopefully they’ll just improve with wear.

MAJOR DESIGN FLAW with this gorgeous boot. The buckle in the back left a huge gash across the opposite knee when I sat down and crossed my legs. Hated to return them because they are so beautiful.

I took the plunge and bought these for Christmas after staring at them just about every day for a month straight. Like many other reviewers, I did not want to shell out the money for them, but after trolling the internet and stores in my local mall, there was nothing that even sparked an interest close to what these boots did when I looked at them. I bought them in black, and I love them. They are the greatest shoe purchase I have ever made. I was also hesitant about the sizing. I’m an 8.5 and that’s what I ordered. They fit perfect with actually a little room to spare (I do wear thin socks with them though). I agree they are slippery the first couple of days, but seriously, you need to wear them in and then after that they are completely fine! I love these so much, I’m hoping to buy the sand colored ones for next fall at some point this year. I have gotten so many compliments on them, and they are beautiful constructed. It is true that you get what you pay for. If you were like me and thinking that maybe a $300 pair would be just a good - maybe so, but I highly highly recommend just putting the extra money out for these boots. You won’t be disappointed. They are not tight on the calves though which is fine for me. I’m 5’6” and a runner so I don’t have thick calves nor are they super skinny. If you have super skinny legs, these may be a bit too big, but I’m average/slim and these are fine!

I love my boots, even though the first pair were not Frye quality. Zappos replaced my boots, no questions asked, they very next day! Thanks to both Frye and Zappos!
Additional Brand Information
The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye is the oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.
Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Decided I needed a great pair of boots. Looked everywhere and was truly disappointed in both the quality and craftsmanship in what was available in my little corner of the world, then remembered as a college student my favorites by far were my Fryes. Decided to take the plunge with Zappos whom I had never done biz with before and was really surpised! The boots are fantastic! And the service is impeccable! I wore them shopping the first day and by the second day they were broken in! No blisters, no rubbing! I'm 5'3" so they hit high on my knee at first and did have slippage in ankle, but by second day they were perfect! They have the same superb craftsmanship that I remembered 30 years ago! Yeah! And my teenage daughter thinks they look great, too! Would choose Zappos again in an instant! Thank you!

I just wanted to add these boots fit well for those with larger calves. I normally have to buy extended calf boots from J.Crew but these fit me perfectly. I am 5'6 1/2 and a clothing size 12 to 14.

Shoe Size: Felt a half size larger than marked Shoe Arch: Moderate arch support Shoe Width: Felt wider than markedI purchased these boots for myself in November and when my daughter saw them she immediately wanted a pair too, so she got them for Christmas. They are just beautiful, great leather and very tall. We both have long legs so they fit us very well. They would not be good on a shorter person. We are 5'8 and 5'9 inches tall. I usually wear a size 8, but had to send them back for a 7 and 1/2 because they were too big. As others have said, they do slip in the ankle when you walk. I wear a thicker sock to help with this. This is the best looking pair of boots I have ever owned.

Shoe Size: Felt a half size larger than markedThese look amazing, but slip a lot when they are on, and are gapey around the front of the ankle. I really wanted to love them as they look amazing, but not perfect.

Love these! The Bordeaux leather is just beautiful! I purchased these to give my feet a break from all my heels. I love winter and wearing my skinny jeans and knee high boots. I have a pair with buttons up both sides by Frye purchased two years ago that have been nicknamed "The Fabulous boots!" based on a compliment received while wearing them. I think all Fryes are fabulous. You won't regret your purchase. These riding boots are just beautiful and have found a welcome home in my closet. Thank you Frye! And Zappos for your outstanding service!

This is a beautiful boot. After only a day of wearing, the heel counter had stretched to the point of my foot slipping out with every step. I found them true to size but perhaps a tad too wide. I have narrow feet.

These boots are true to fit (I am a size 6) and they fit perfectly with a regular thickness sock. As for height, I thought they were perfect. I am 5'5" and they hit right below the knee and with some skinny jeans or leggings tucked in, made for a long lean line. There is heel slippage which I was able to remedy with those self-adhesive heel inserts. But eventually they have stretched to become comfortable even when walking for miles (I live in the city). I think they are a good investment because they are classic, high-quality and will last for a long time with regular maintenance. I am even able to wear them to work (I work in a corporate setting) with some black tights, black skirt and a stylish top. Highly recommended and Zappos delivery was speedy.

Shoe Size: Felt a half size larger than marked Shoe Arch: Excellent arch support Shoe Width: Felt wider than markedThese are absolutely the greatest boots ever! They are very comfortable, although a bit roomy in the heel, and probably run a half size larger than marked, but the leather strap at the ankle helps the fit. Pants stay tucked nicely because they are quite high. The leather is so soft both inside and out. I wear them barefoot. The attention to detail is fantastic. They look great with jeans, skirts, and casual dresses. A friend saw them on me and purchased two pair for herself. The black and brown have the soft leather. The other colors have more of a pebble leather feel. As usual, Zappos service is great.

Shoe Size: Felt a half size larger than marked Shoe Arch: Excellent arch support Shoe Width: Felt narrower than markedThe only thing better than my new boots was the customer service Zappos provides. I bought these boots in Bordeaux, Black and Chocolate. I know, a little over the top! Like most Frye boots, I ordered a 1/2 size smaller than my usual shoe size and it was a great fit. Fryes usually feel a little narrow with some heel slippage for the first couple of wearings, but are soon broken in and feel like old friends. I also bought the Maxine Loop Pull On and it was immediately comfy. I got the Brick in a 5.5 and the Black in a 6 and there didn't seem to be much difference, both were really good on first wearing. Well I must go now. I have to take at least one of these pairs of boots for a walk!

Shoe Size: Felt a half size larger than marked Shoe Arch: Moderate arch support Shoe Width: Felt true to widthThe Frye Dorado Riding Boot: I love it! I am petite(5'3"), have slim legs and these boots look gorgeous. I bought the Bordeaux. It is rich & beyond. It took a few wearings to break in but they were definitely worth the patience. And, ladies, they are sexy! Stop thinking about them and just get them. You won't be sorry.

Shoe Size: Felt a half size larger than marked Shoe Arch: No arch support Shoe Width: Felt wider than markedI\'m reporting back with the results on the Dorado Riding Boot by Frye. There was nothing I could do about the heel slippage. I tried socks, double socks, heel inserts, and entire shoe inserts. The only thing that occurred was that the boot became tighter in the toe area, but still slipped in the heel. I then tried to order another size down and received a pair of 8\'s. Because I normally take an 8.5 or a 9, the 8\'s were too small. They fit on my foot tightly, but they still slipped in the heel! In short, these boots were very uncomfortable. The only way I would purchase them with this flaw is if they were much cheaper maybe $99, but certainly not over $400. \r\n\r\n

I just love my boots! Frye boots normally look very western. This style is more of a fashion boot. I am 50+ and my daugther is 17. We both look appropriate in this style. Very comfortable, beautiful leather! I keep the foam insert in the boot when they are in my closet to keep the boots nice and tall.

Absolutely beautiful is the best way to describe these boots. They were comfortable the first time I wore them, no breaking in necessary. They are expensive, but totally worth it.

These boots are cute, but they slip in the heel and are tight in the toe box. Additionally they run big. I never wear an 8 anymore, but in these I definitely need an 8. For the amount I paid one would think that the fit would be perfect, soft and comfortable. It definitely was not.

Shoe Size: Felt a full size smaller than marked Shoe Arch: No arch support Shoe Width: Felt wider than markedAfter carefully reading all of the reviews on this Frye Dorado Riding Boot, I decided to take a chance. I was very concerned about the reports on heel slippage, so I decided to order an 8.5 instead of a 9. I have two other pairs of Frye Boots (Harness and Campus) in size 9 and they fit swell, a little big, but never a problem with slipping, blisters, tightness, etc. These boots run big. They are longer than where my toes end, but kind of tight in the ball of the foot area, and I don't have any issues with width or bunions. Unfortunately, they slip in the heel like mad. I am so disappointed. I don't know if it's just this pair, or if it's all of them. I'm wearing them right now and here's what happens: Standing with my feet flat on the ground, they're fine, but if I position my feet into a tiptoe, you can feel a gigantic gap of space under your heel area. When I walk, even just a few feet my heel goes up and down rubbing the back of the boot. It's really annoying. I'm going to see if there's anything I can do about this because they are gorgeous boots. The shaft fits perfectly and even offers plenty of room to tuck in jeans (my calves are normal sized). I'll try a few things in an effort to remedy the situation and report back with the results.
