The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

So, here I am on my search odyssey, trying to find a good long boot, and this is Frye no 5. Yes, the heel slippage was just right (I am a medium to narrow 7.5 and 7 was a nice fit with thin socks), the side zip made it a tad easier to get them on and then...anyone who runs or does daily exercise, the ankles usually become narrow, and the calf girth exactly at the maximum thickness of the soleus muscle becomes thick, this is normal anatomy of a runner! But guess what, no one sent the memo to long-boot makers? Everything fits well but the calf is so tight, it's snug on even thin socks. I have 14.5-15" calves and it is darn near impossible to find a good long boot where I can tuck in my jodhpurs or breeches. Guess I will try again, or have to get custom shoes made. The sad part is, the shoe is so nice, it breaks your heart to send it back.

Great boots! Also, I ordered the wrong size and returning them for another pair was seamless. I highly recommend this vendor.

Slick for Frye, primarily because of the leather's gloss. Great with short skirts and skinny jeans. A word of caution: not designed for a large calf girth, which works fine for me but won't for everyone.

I'd also recommend: Lucchese

After sending back the Frye Shirley Riding boots because I found my calves swimming in them, I tried these. These boots are perfect for slimmer, longer legs. I am 5'8" with 13.5" calves and wear a size 7.5 and these babies fit like a glove with skinny jeans/jeggings and average thickness knee high socks. They are a little narrow in the foot bed but length-wise fit true to size. The overall style from the polished leather to the buckle placement is so classic. I love these boots!

I love these boots I just received them today and I am very impressed but you should order these boots one size larger than your normal size. They run narrow so I ordered a size 8 but I really need a 8.5 my usual size is 7.5. Classy and chic for work and casual wear.
