The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I got the dark brown color, mainly because it was (and still is, as of now) on sale. I was a bit skeptical, because I was wanting a lighter brown color. To my surprise, the dark brown looks amazing! The boots are fairly comfortable, I have a lot of shoes, so I wear these a few times a week (which is A LOT, for me at least) They feel extremely study, and well-made. They are made in China, but that should not cause you to doubt these boots. Yes, you should order a half size smaller than your true size.

I now have 4 pair of Frye boots or shoes. They are by far my favorite brand of shoe, partly because they look great, partly because they last for-freaking-ever and also due in very large part because they don't hurt my feet. I have flat feet and I live in New York City. This is a deadly combination. As I've gotten older, all the walking has really started to cause me a lot of foot pain. Inserts don't help and the podiatrist tells me custom orthotics are my next step (so to speak). Enter Frye. Frye shoes don't give a great deal of support, which seems to be what my feet like. They're also very roomy, another plus. I'm told that all Frye insoles are essentially the same, but the out-soles — the soles on the exterior of the shoe — vary to some degree. I have Fryes with the lug sole and with the gum sole. But this Dakota toe cap uses the wedge sole, and that's my favorite. It provides the thickness and shock absorption of a lug sole with a bit lower heel, a winning combo for my flat feet. This Dakota Cap Toe took a couple days to break in. Initially the stiff new leather rubbed my ankles a bit. But they feel great now and they look terrific. The cap toe and dark brown even make them a bit dressier than the usual Frye shoe. I'm a huge Frye fan. Their shoes, while expensive, last forever, look great and don't hurt my feet. And I walk all the time. I highly recommend Frye boots and shoes!

I've been looking for a replacement to my Red Wings. Naturally, I tried Red Wings again...but not soup. Frye was next in line and these...are...fantastic! These are my first pair of Frye's and I couldn't be happier. They break-in well, they're wearing excellent, they're comfortable, stylish, and the highest quality boots I've ever owned. I definitely recommend, x10!

I'd also recommend: Florsheim, Frye, Ugg, Red Wing

Beautiful pair of boots. I was torn between these and the Frye Dakota plain toe in suede. I ordered both and this cap toe won out. The brogue detailing on the toe, along with the slightly contrasted color makes these an extremely handsome pair of boots (I picked up the Sunrise). I sized down .5 size from my normal dress shoe size, and they fit perfectly. However if you're planning on wearing a thicker sock in colder climates, perhaps you should go with your true size. The outsole is thick and durable, however it does mark easily. But boots always look best when worn in, so no issues there. Comes with 2 sets of laces, leather and cotton. I opted for the leather, as they break in nicely after a couple wears. The same can be said for the boot itself. Overall very satisfied. The only downside is that they are made in China. I expected a boot of this quality and cost to be made in the US. Love them.

Great looking boot. Pairs well with jeans. Love the leather laces and speed lacing. I have received compliments on the Dakota Cap Toe. They took very little break in, are very comfortable, and I believe they will last a very long time. They run a little small and maybe a little narrow, but fit me nicely. Worth the money.
