This is an impeccably made boot, very good leather throughout, from outside to inside lining and sole. But they are very casual. I ordered these in black and the leather is so distressed it verges on suede. They are also very wide in the calf area (good for athletic or larger calves) and the thick leather is baggy and most likely prone to slouching if your calf width isn't on the larger side. Unfortunately, I was searching for a stiffer, more slender boot so I sent these back. They definitely run true to size in the foot bed and are extremely comfortable. They do look best if you are wearing as skirt with opaque tights, a casual dress, or tucked into straight legged jeans, which will show off the cool styling of this beautiful boot. Otherwise, like another reviewer noted, the round toe of the boot does look somewhat dorky under pants alone. The beauty of these boots is in the comfort, the high quality craftsmanship, and the edgy harness detail. But if you're looking for a boot simply to wear under pants, go for the classic Frye Harness 12R. I hope this helps!

Perfect boot with slacks (tucked in or worn over the boot) and casual dresses or skirts. The pebbled leather is a bit different from most boots and until I got advice regarding maintenance I nearly sent them back. The heel height is perfect, calf volume larger than my average size calves, but works well to tuck in pants. These are a great alternative to black stiletto dress boots and much more comfortable. They will last forever. Typical Frye: high quality leather, fit well.

These are the best boots I've ever owned. I received them about two weeks ago and haven't worn anything else on my feet since. I wear a size 7, and ordered a 7 in the grey. They felt true to size, but I returned them for a size 8 in black because I wanted to be able to wear thick wool socks with them. They go with anything from dresses, skirts and leggings, to jeans. The heel height on these boots is almost 2 3/4, which is great for adding height. I am an artist and student and I'm always on my feet in the studio playing with tools/running around campus and they are still comfortable and very durable. A staple in the wardrobe, and will last a long time. Make the investment; you wont be disappointed.

While these boots are comfy and the leather is really nice, they are really slouchy and they are very "top" heavy and baggy. Really bummed too because otherwise they are great looking boots. For the money though, I will have to return them and try something else.

If it is possible to fall in love with a boot, then this is the boot. It is a bit slouchy; it isn't completely stiff all the way to the knee. I expected that though and I love it. The rugged look and weathered gray. The compliments are off the charts and so is the versatility. I have worn these with favorite jeans and dresses. I can't get enough of them. Worth the money.

Additional Brand Information

The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye is the oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

The size chart had me at a 37-38 so a size 7; actually, I had to exchange and go with a size 7.5. The exchange process was a breeze. The Zappos people are really a pleasure to do business with. I have really large calves; I won't be tucking anything in them, but at least I can fit my legs in them, that is a miracle. I finally found some boots that fit! Soft leather and comfy. I am so happy! Thank you!

These are great boots! For those of you with above average size calves, this is your chance to have some great boots that will fit! For those of you with regular calves, you will be able to wear your skinny jeans inside these (I can even get mine tucked in there). If you have below average calves, they might be too loose. They have a western flare, but aren't too overtly "cowboy" boots; they look great with all kinds of skirts and dresses. I ordered my "normal" size and they fit great. They are actually very comfortable. I have worn them to teach for over 5 hours and had no problems.

Finally, a boot that reaches just below the kneecap and is roomy enough for those of us with larger legs! These were the first boots I could easily pull on over my jeans (or leggings). Everybody keeps asking me where I got my boots. All my Fryes last forever, too.

These boots are classic. They fit perfectly, as I find is usually the case with Frye Boots, they look fantastic and oh! the leather is gorgeous. Best of all, while they may cost a bit more than other boots you can find, they'll last forever. I have another pair of Frye harness boots that I've been kicking around in for 15 years. I figure I'll be wearing these around town when I'm in a walker!

Excellent boot particularly for larger calves. It's a bit baggy in the ankle, but I got the dark brown color (which is a gorgeous textured/worn-and-loved looking leather) that makes the bagginess look like it's just worn that way. The boot itself fits like a Frye boot, meaning extremely comfortable from day one and will only get better with wearing. The toe area seems to have a little more room than the other "Carmen" styles. I have narrow feet but thick socks make the fit perfect. The heel is the perfect height (not too tall to be uncomfortable, but tall enough to make your legs look long and sleek) and the slightly upturned toe gives the boot an extra little flair that I absolutely love (I have several other "Frye Carmen" styles with the up-turned rocker look). All-in-all a gorgeous boot well worth the money, but not for the skinny-calved girls.

These are my favorite boots. I have ordered them in light tan and will get the chocolate brown. I have other Frye boots, but these are the best.

Love these boots! In my opinion they are designed to be a little loose. It makes for a more casual, worn in look. Beautiful leather & great comfort from day 1.\r\n\r\n

Finally a tall boot that fits my large calves! Love, Love, Love them, the usual awesome Frye quality, got them in the dark brown and am thinking of the grey and tan as well. Expensive, but worth every penny for the great fit!

Love, so pretty. I comparison shopped the Frye Veronica Slouch with this boot and kept the Carmen Harness Tall. It is so beautiful, fits great on my wide foot and muscular calves. Goes with everything: jeans, skirts, etc. No complaints Zappos. I love you, too!

Kind of baggy; I didn't like these boots. The shaft is baggy, but not in a good slouchy way, just baggy. I was hoping I'd be able to wear them with skirts, but the bagginess is just unattractive. I tried them with pants not tucked in, and the round toe looks sort of dorky. Also, I think Frye is way overpriced. These looked so pretty online I thought it might be worth it, but when I actually tried them on: no.

My first pair of Frye boots and they're to die for! The leather upper is surprisingly soft and not thick as I expected, so I'm really hoping they will last as long as Fryes are said to last. As to the fit, I'd say they run slightly narrow. I can usually wear a heavy sock (wigwams) under my boots, but these are too narrow for that. I'm just going to have to buy some warm, thin silk socks, because these boots are too hot to send back.

I was headed to CO for a Stampede Rodeo and needed a pair of boots. I ordered these and as soon as I got them I tried them on and didn't want to take them off! They are so comfortable and look amazing on. I even bought a pair for my step-daughter and her friend and they absolutely love them too!
