Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.
In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.
The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Absolutely love these mules! I typically wear a 7 or 7.5 and ended up buying 7's.

I hate to do this, because these boots are a work of art. Unbelievably thick leather, beautifully crafted, they and go with everything. But they are downright painful to walk in. Each shoe weighs 1.5 lbs. I believe the sole is made of wood. The toe is narrow, and the heel is loose (I have a medium foot--pretty average). Even after inserting the most expensive gel inserts, my shins and feet ache after walking only a small bit around the office. I still wear them because they are gorgeous. But then I have to put them away for at least a week to let my feet and lower leg bones recover.

I absolutely love these shoes! They are very well made and look great. They are a bit heavy but definitely worth it.

Loved the brown belted harness mule from a year ago so much that I finally bought them in black too (I'm such a procrastinator; luckily they had my size! whew). This mule is weighty and solid. I like my jeans bootcut and long and it entertains me to no end when I can look down and peek at the hardware on these short short boots. I'm not a clog fan because they always seem to slip off my feet, so what's fantastic about this shoe is the rear harness can slip up around the back of your foot for stay-on-ability (that's my new word for the day). I love boots and Frye seems to be built well and solid and they last a long time. I'm addicted to Frye and this shoe-boot does not disappoint!

This is my first pair of Frye and it is better than anticipated. I'm already looking at the Frye Harness boots. The greasy (oiled) leather is just lovely; it will take on a beautiful patina over time. I chose the black leather as it looks more 'motorcycle' than 'country'. I haven't worn it extensively yet but I can tell there is no pinching of the toes, with plenty of space toward the tip so your toes don't get jammed. The most impressive thing about this mule is the stability it offers with the 2" heel. I have bought other boots with 2" heels and I always feel like I'm going to trip and fall. Not these Frye mules. Very solid block heel that helps stabilize the whole foot. It is the most expensive shoe I've ever purchased, but it's a very good investment and that's high praise coming from a bargain hunter and picky shopper. As usual, I got superior service from Zappos, ordered the evening before, received the following afternoon!

Just what I expected - I ordered half a size down (as suggested), and the fit was perfect. I already own the low brown Harness boot and have enjoyed them for almost 5 years now. They are still in tact and as comfortable as ever! These are even easier to wear, because they slide on. I am sure I will enjoy them for many years to come.
