Great training shoe - Buy them as small as you can. They will hurt in the beginning, but quickly stretch to mold to your foot. Then they're like wearing sticky gloves on your feet. Great training shoe because they force you "smedge" hard. Not the greatest edgers, but great for smearing.

These shoes rock! I used this shoe on Volcanic, Granite, Crack, Sandstone, Limestone, and Buildering in St. George Utah. I have a pair in size 10 M as my comfort shoes for bouldering as well as moderate sport climbs. I have another pair in size 9.5 M for my 5.11 and up climbs. This shoe is Bombproof!! I've been using the Moccasym for the past six years and now I work for Zappos.com as a Merchandising Assistant for Outdoor Footwear department. My goal is to always have your size in this shoe, we carry every size Five Ten makes in this style.

Great all around Shoe! Shoes is great, I am a fairly new climber and these shoes helped me to improve quite a bit, The rubber is very sticky, and the shoes, once broken in feel like a second pair of skin. I wear a ten and went down to a nine, and they seem to fit just about right, still a little snug but I have only climbed in them 8 times or so.

These are probably the most comfortable climbing shoes I have ever worn (in 10+ years of climbing)! The last is EXTREMELY soft making these a good shoe for lapping, training, or bouldering. Definitely not the go to shoe for slab edging performance but they perform admirably on most other angles. If you are looking for something that you can wear all night at the local climbatorium you can rejoice, for your prayers have been answered. Get these shoes if you're tired of the pain game! Stealth rubber, 'nough said.

The BEST all around climbing shoe - I have been using Moccasyms for years. They are my guiding shoe of choice due to their sensitivity, comfort, ease of on/off at belays. I also use this shoe religiously for sandstone crack climbing. Their slipper design means they don't interfere with inserting your foot into all sizes of cracks!

Five Ten Inspired by the impossible

A family owned company, 5.10 (also known as Five Ten) has stood at the forefront of fine craftsmanship, high-performance and fashion forward technical designs within the outdoor industry since 1985. Born with a rich rock climbing heritage, 5.10 is known worldwide for the high-quality, fit and friction of their shoes, where footwear can make the difference between success and failure. Today, they continue to bring their climbing heritage to all of their products, as well as exciting innovation, quality craftsmanship and unmatched durability. Climbers, kayakers, mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, canyoneers, and everyone else who wants technical/fashionable outdoor footwear depend on 5.10 for safety, state-of-the-art innovation, and out-of-the-box comfort.

As a huge climbing enthusiast, Charles Cole, founder and President of 5.10, knows that a good grip on a well-made shoe means everything. Determined to create a better rubber to make climbing easier, Charles developed Stealth© rubber soles, which increase the amount of body weight the rubber could bear before its bond broke away from the rock. By merely purchasing a new shoe, climbers could better climb with a sure-footed grip. Pushing the envelope even further, Cole continues to expand 5.10 soles even further with Stealth© S1, Stealth© C4, Stealth© HF (high friction), Stealth© Amphibia (water compatible), and Stealth© ONYXX, which provides 25% more friction and is twice as durable as any other climbing rubber available.

Stealth© rubber was just the tip of the iceberg for Cole and 5.10. Responsible for today's modern rock shoe design, Cole invented a plethora of firsts which include: the first sling shot rand, the first down-turned last, the first heel wedge to cushion impact, adding pull tabs on both climbing and approach shoes, baseball stitching to alleviate hot spots, graded midsoles to adjust the shoe's flexibility to different weights, the first self-draining water shoe and the first ankle to toe lacing on an approach shoe to allow for a performance custom fit. Throughout the years, there have been various 5.10 innovations, and in the years yet to come, their dedication will lead to many more.

As the shoe-of-choice for the world's top climbers, 5.10 is 100% committed to innovation and performance. All of their unique footwear designs have been produced with one goal in mind: to do what is best for outdoor sports athletes who use 5.10 shoes. From hiking to paddling to mountain biking, recreational and expert athletes alike know that Five Ten means more than footwear- Five Ten shoes are essential equipment for adventure. Rest assured that 5.10 is working hard on next season's models and that they will be bringing something wild, new and exciting into the world of adventure sports.

Five Ten Where unique comfort, durability and technological advances combine to create the best footwear in the world.

As I'm sure you can gather from all the other reviews, this is one of the best all-around shoes out there. You may get people who scoff at you for using "outdated technology" as they strut around in their clunky velcro-covered zipper shoes with prehensile toes and all-rubber coatings, but you can chuckle at them (on the inside of course...those zippers can leave a mark) and know that sometimes the classics are the best. Performance wise, if you size these right, they will fit quite literally like a glove (mine have little grooves on the tops and on the insole that my toes slip into so that my foot never shifts the slightest). The only trouble, as many have pointed out, is heel hooking. Though, after reading all the complaints, I was pleasantly surprised. Unless you're working a seriously overhanging arête, they feel really quite secure on any hooks I can throw at them (throw them at?). The only tough thing is trying to hook something that has a point. There is not much padding on the heels, so it can be a bit painful. As for sizing, get them SMALL! They hurt like hell the first few days, don't worry. It took me a solid 5 minutes to get them on the first day, and I couldn't walk in them for at least 2 days, but now they are custom molded. For size, here goes: I wear 9 in the evolv defy's, 9 in anasazis, 9 in Jet 7's, ~10 dragons and 7.5 is perfect for me in the moccasyms. Not considering the pain, you may not love them the first few days, the rubber takes a bit of time to get supple and sticky, but then its game on! Smears, smedges, toe hooks, slabs, overhangs, it excels at most everything, and as your feet get stronger, the shoes feel better and better! All in all, I would say the best combo of shoes you could have would be the mocs plus an aggressive shoe (dragons, solutions, etc) for tough redpoints and overhanging pockets. However, I really think you could do with just these shoes in your arsenal and never feel the need for anything else.

Having used these shoes for a month and a half now I can honestly say that they are incredible. They fit like a glove and, having broken them in after about a week and a half, are reasonably comfortable! They edge well and are incredibly precise. Heel hooking is okay, but toe-hooking is a bit of a pain as the leather is unlined. The only downside is that the dye tends to leave my feet stained with red ink after a day of climbing. Size-wise, I wear a 14 in street shoes, a 14.5 in Evolvs (flat-lasted, lace-ups) and I have the mocs in 13.5. The toe bed was a bit jammed at first, but now feels good. This is an awesome second pair of shoes.

There is a reason these shoes have been around as long as they have...fantastic all around shoe. No matter what else I have in my pack, I always have a pair of Moccasyms, and they work fantastic for just about everything except micro-edging (then I break out the not-so-comfy Anasazi velcros). Unlike the other reviewer, I don't buy mine small. In fact I buy them a half size bigger than my other shoes so they will be comfy for all day use and also fantastic for skinny little cracks. Curled toes are excruciating for cracks and a boxy toe won't perform on little cracks. If I bought them small, maybe they would be great for micro-edges also, but I will happily have comfy feet for 90% of my climbing and crank on the edging shoes when I have to.

Brands I'd also recommend: Five-Ten Anasazi for painful but precision edging.

Great shoe for a beginner climber. This is my first climbing shoe and I love it thus far. Its been great for bouldering, too. My only complaint is that it doesn't really stretch as much as some people have suggested. I've worn it more than 10 times now and it is still moderately uncomfortable (to the extent of being painful) on one leg. I bought one size smaller than my regular shoe size, and would suggest new climbers trying half a size smaller to start with. Overall, its a good slipper and I would definitely recommend it to others.

I bought this shoe in the same size as my street shoe, size 14, and they were very tight at first, but not uncomfortably so. I felt an immediate difference climbing. I could grip so much more easily than ever before, it felt like cheating! I highly recommend these. They will stain your feet, but it's worth it.

I am the definition of an ass-backwards climber. For years, I have been climbing up boulders and rock faces created from construction blasting. I only recently discovered that what I've been doing is called "bouldering" - as well as solo free-climbing (as I often can't help myself and end up climbing 100ft rock faces without pros), and a primitive version of solo top-roping (when I decide said cliffs are too dangerous and use elaborate knots and the reverse of a rappelling technique I learned at an adventure camp when I was 12.) I am now 29. Until a few months ago, I lived in Manhattan and had some favorite rocks and boulders deep within the ramble of Central Park that I would climb up and down on weekends or in the morning. Point of my backstory - I knew very little about climbing, other than that I was very good at it and loved it. But a few months ago, I found myself stuck in Connecticut at my parent's condo - the entire complex has been created by blasting massive amounts of granite to create views and levels. Result - incredible rock faces. With some free time on my hands, I decided to look into getting some more legit equipment and pros to take advantage of this incredible terrain. I've climbed in converse all my life. To the point where I've done more than a just a few unroped free solo 5'7 climbs in the gunks in my trusty chucks. I was ready to get real shoes. Sooooo... I did massive amount of research, read every article, book, and review known to man, and finally settled on the Moccasyms, mostly because of their great reviews, easy on/off features, and weight (I backpack frequently and often wish I had something better that hiking boots for the many rock faces and boulders I pass on my travels). All the Zappos reviews of this shoe recommend to size down, so I ordered a 6 and a 5.5 womens. As a novice to climbing shoes, when they came home and I tried them on, I thought "holy s**t, these are worse then Chinese foot binding. Foolishly, I listened to the instructions on the 510 box that say that shoes should never hurt and street size is just a starting point, so I sent them back in exchange for a 7.5 womens. I am a 6. The new pair arrived and still hurt, but they were tolerable. Flash forward: I now know a tremendous amount about bouldering, climbing, and shoe fit. I ordered the Moccasyms again in a 6 and am slowly breaking them in. I tried a billion different other shoes (thanks Zappos awesome return policy and free shipping) in the meantime. The Moccasyms were still the best, and the customers reviews kept me hooked. However, I still own my size 7.5 pair as well. And honestly, I love them. So much. I can wear them with socks in the winter and still feel every edge. The first day I climbed in them (as opposed to my Chucks), I felt like I was cheating - I could get toe holds and edge and smear in ways I'd previously thought were impossible. Thanks to the Moccasyms, my bouldering is much safer - they are so responsive that I can find tons of problems only feet above the ground, instead of climbing restlessly all over and up looking for big footholds. My size sixes hurt less and less as I break them in. But if you are as ignorant and primitive with your climbing experience and technique as I was, I say get a much bigger pair and a tiny, recommended size super-painful pair. With two pairs, I can climb all day, switching to my 7.5s when my 6s are beyond killing me and yet not losing much in the way of the shoe's features at all. Even in the big size, I can grip anything, smear all over the place, and edge with incredible responsiveness. I feel like I'm in bare feet, even with socks - an awesome thing for bouldering in below-freezing weather. From I've gathered, the Moccasyms are like the perfect climbing shoe. I see experts wearing them in magazines all the time. But until I'm good enough that I can handle the pain of the sizing recommended by them, it's great to also have a nice comfy size that I can train with when my feet give out. Either way, these shoes have changed my life!
