Great Shoes! These shoes were comfortable from the first time I wore them, that is after I got a pair a half size larger than I normally wear. The soles are nice and grippy, they also leave marks on most floors. Overall great shoes.

Don't believe the hype - I've read reviews about this pair of shoe from a couple of websites and all but one reviews were good. I should have taken note of the review that indicated this shoe had problems. The look is great but poor arch support, width ok but the biggest problem (and disappointment) is the sole. I found the soles were quite slippery on all the surfaces I walked on. It has an ok grip on rocks and cement but very slippery on grass etc. Maybe I had a defective pair but I don't recommend buying it unless you are planning on walking on a really, really dry and rugged surface.

Great Shoe with a Terrific Fit - When looking for an approach shoe, one must remember that these shoes vary widely in function, similar to how soft shells vary widely in warmth and breathe ability. The Guide Tennie is a very technical approach shoe designed to support the primary activity of climbing. This shoe's fit is similar to a rock climbing shoe. Note: I also own the Prodigy by Five Ten, which one could wear all day long at home, on the trail, where ever, in complete comfort and then climb "ok" too. The Guide Tennie will walk in fair comfort, but climb very well. Some say that this shoe fit is too low in volume and that one should buy one size over, or complained about arch support and comfort. It's important to understand that this shoe is made for climbing primarily, walking secondarily. I bought two pairs of this shoe, one oversized, and the pair that corresponded to my foot size did turn out to be correct. The shoes have a very precise fit and one size over may be big if you really want to climb in them. I talked with the folks at 5-10 also and they did NOT know that some people recommend buying a size over. In sum, if you want a climbing shoe that will approach, buy the Guide Tennie. If you want a shoe that has great comfort and can climb somewhat, then but something else like the Prodigy, or the Insight both made by 5-10. Finally, for approaches, this shoe is not as aggressive in scrambling as the Prodigy, its best on straight forward trails. So when considering how serious you are about climbing in this shoe, also consider how good it needs to be for rugged, steep, approaches that may have talus, etc.

Overall these are good approach shoes. The part where they excel is the toe section. It's very tight (the way the climbing shoes should be) and it takes some time to break that area in. They also don't look so bad so they can be easily worn as casual shoes. The sole is very sticky which is good, but I wish the "groves" were deeper. The confusing part about these shoes is the mid-to-rear section. Namely, arch support is poor. One could argue that it's not necessary but similar La Sportiva approach shoes offer excellent arch support. Perhaps some insole inserts can fix this problem. Also the heel support is good but not as good as with similar La Sportiva approach shoes. Shoe laces are good but a bit too thick so that a fine adjustment is rather hard. Sole in heel area also appears a bit bulky so that jamming the heel and using it as support during some climbs will be very hard. In short, these are good to very-good but not excellent approach shoes. They climb well due to good front/toe section and they are comfortable for walking but they lack good arch support. Even though they are not on par with La Sportiva approach shoes in terms of technical characteristics, they are definitely better looking.

A family owned company, 5.10 (also known as Five Ten) has stood at the forefront of fine craftsmanship, high-performance and fashion forward technical designs within the outdoor industry since 1985. Born with a rich rock climbing heritage, 5.10 is known worldwide for the high-quality, fit and friction of their shoes, where footwear can make the difference between success and failure. Today, they continue to bring their climbing heritage to all of their products, as well as exciting innovation, quality craftsmanship and unmatched durability. Climbers, kayakers, mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, canyoneers, and everyone else who wants technical/fashionable outdoor footwear depend on 5.10 for safety, state-of-the-art innovation, and out-of-the-box comfort.

As a huge climbing enthusiast, Charles Cole, founder and President of 5.10, knows that a good grip on a well-made shoe means everything. Determined to create a better rubber to make climbing easier, Charles developed Stealth© rubber soles, which increase the amount of body weight the rubber could bear before its bond broke away from the rock. By merely purchasing a new shoe, climbers could better climb with a sure-footed grip. Pushing the envelope even further, Cole continues to expand 5.10 soles even further with Stealth© S1, Stealth© C4, Stealth© HF (high friction), Stealth© Amphibia (water compatible), and Stealth© ONYXX, which provides 25% more friction and is twice as durable as any other climbing rubber available.

Stealth© rubber was just the tip of the iceberg for Cole and 5.10. Responsible for today's modern rock shoe design, Cole invented a plethora of firsts which include: the first sling shot rand, the first down-turned last, the first heel wedge to cushion impact, adding pull tabs on both climbing and approach shoes, baseball stitching to alleviate hot spots, graded midsoles to adjust the shoe's flexibility to different weights, the first self-draining water shoe and the first ankle to toe lacing on an approach shoe to allow for a performance custom fit. Throughout the years, there have been various 5.10 innovations, and in the years yet to come, their dedication will lead to many more.

As the shoe-of-choice for the world's top climbers, 5.10 is 100% committed to innovation and performance. Gosu Shoes - This shoe is so comfortable. I required almost no time for breaking in. The shoes are very light. On rough surfaces this shoe reins supreme, as its super-sticky sole just clings. However if you are on a polished floor surface it’s a bit slippery. Just a minor tradeoff for some GOSU GRIP outside!!! Oh and they just happen to be pretty sexy as well.

Good approach shoe (not a normal hiker) The Tennies are climbing shoes with compromises made to allow a comfortable hike-in--though old, retired GT's are great for lounging about. The climbing ability of these shoes is just amazing given their comfort. But, if you don't plan to spend time on class 4 and 5 routes, get another shoe. The GT's are sized as normal street shoes, so if you plan to use them for their purpose (trail to summit) you'll want a half-size smaller, e.g., I wear 11's for street shoes, and 10.5's in Guide Tennies. If you buy your normal size you'll have a 1/2 inch or more of empty shoe at the toe, making it impossible to toe-in and unnecessarily difficult to edge or smear. I'm on my third pair now and one lesson to pass on is that these will stretch some, especially with summer heat and sweat--so be weary of anything but a snug fit when new. Another lesson is that toe discomfort means the laces aren't snug enough, the opposite of what one first thinks, not that the shoe is too small. My only complaint, if I really dig for one, would be the limited lateral support to prevent shifting off the sole's centerline when on a steep, angular, sideways hold or smear.

Brands I'd also recommend: None - the GT is in a class by itself

The perfect shoe (if it's what you're looking for) While I own 5.10 climbing and approach shoes, I was really looking for a pair of comfortable shoes I could wear when exploring new cities--perhaps indulging in some parkour--without being ridiculously branded. The Guide Tennie succeeds on all counts. No big swoosh or three stripes on the side, nice grippy sole, and enough comfort for a week of 6+ hour days of walking and playing around. When traveling, I always pack light and move around a lot, and this shoe helps quite a bit--just these and a pair of flip-flops are all I need. In fact, I just got back from a two-week trip (Helsinki, Tallinn, Stockholm, and Copenhagen) and these were all I needed. The photo of the shoe on this site really makes the "Star of David" cross-stitching stand out, but it's not nearly as noticeable in real life. It's just a neutral-colored, plain shoe with a subtle logo on the heel. As for the fit, they might not be a full half-size smaller, but they're definitely a little tight...of course, as a nominal "climbing shoe" this shouldn't surprise you. Wear thinner socks and you'll be all right. Or just be glad they're a bit tight when you're trying to send that urban boulder problem. Personally, as a guy who wears a 13 but would sometimes like a 12.5 (if only such a size existed), these are perfect. My new everyday shoe once flip-flop weather is gone.

Comfy shoe - Never written a review, but uh, I mean it’s a really comfortable shoe, solid construction; it gets absolutely no traction inside. I can actually run and slide on our concrete floors at work, but outside on asphalt or rocks or whatever, the traction is phenomenal. I balanced my weight on a rock at a very steep angle, and any other outsole on any other shoe I’ve owned would have without a doubt slid, this shoe held me perfectly didn’t slide, didn’t budge, so I’d say if you were goin hiking around some small rocks, this shoe is awesome.

Guide Tennie - I prefer this to the other 5.10 approach shoes because it is lighter and smaller, so it fits in your pack better for the ascent. I sized this down a bit from my regular tennis shoe size without compromising comfort.

not bad for the street tack - The stealth rubber is great for out side traction and perfect for wall gripping (as long as its concrete or rock). These things slid all over on painted floors or smooth tile and WATCH OUT THESE ARE MARKING SOLES. over all good.

Great all the way! I purchased the Five Ten Guide Tennie shoes for my nephew who lives in Seoul. He could not get the size 11.5 there, so I bought them through Zappo.com. Then I shipped them to him. He needed a pair of walking shoes to wear on a television travel shoe that he is hosting. They required a non sneaker looking shoe that is why he chose the Five Ten Guide Tennie shoe. He is very satisfied. I have to say that Zappos gave an excellent service.

Best pair of approach shoes I've ever owned. Seriously great for all kinds of hiking and scrambling to the crag. Perfect for day hikes (if you don't require a lot of ankle support). Only complaint is the padding for the soles, it’s hard and uncomfortable. Do yourself a favor and buy some gel inserts and you will be good to go!

Great Shoe. In my opinion Guide Tennie is the most comfortable hiking/approach shoe that I've ever used (and I've had several). They’re comfortable like running shoes, sticky like climbing shoes, and great on the trail. I never hike or backpack in boots anymore, just approach shoes and the Guide Tennies are the best.

Great for what it was designed, but... This is a great approach shoe, meaning the sole is designed to cling to rock. However, it is not a great everyday wearer. Too slippery on many surfaces like tile or grass. It's a shame because I would wear it ALL the time if it didn't slip.

I am more than happy with this product and the service of zappos.com! I ordered the woman's classic short in chestnut, and yes, they are amazing, warm, and comfortable. I was worried to order a size smaller just because I want to get a lot of wear out of these boots, typically I am a size 6.5 or 7, but I took the advice to order a size smaller (6). The 6 works perfectly and there is still some room for growth. I couldn't be happier. Thank you Zappos for making it much easier to find exactly what I was looking for. 2 words of advice: 1) order a size smaller! 2) buy the water repellent spray I will definitely purchase from Zappos again. If only other sites online were like Zappos.

Yeah for 5 10 - the Guide Tennie is back! These are great shoes (so far). The only negative is the classic 5 10 dot-patterned tread, which isn't as aggressively grippy on loose trails as other styled treads. I bought these to replace my old Guide Tennies (which literally fell apart after many years of hard use). That said it's hard to beat 5 10's stealth rubber, excellent comfort/fit, and good looks. As with most 5 10s, these are great for wide feet, since they fit a bit roomier in the toe box than most similar shoes.

So satisfied it's not even funny. I got these shoes for approach and moderate hikes. Out of the box they fit great, my right toes started to go numb, adjusted the laces a bit and BAM! Perfect. I've run across talus fields, scrambled up loose dirt gulleys, free soloed easy routes and sent moderate boulder problems. Grip is excellent. Wet sandy rocks are no match for these shoes. Marking soles and lack of style are the only things that keep me from wearing these every day. So I ordered some Freerunners. 5.10 FTW!
