This is a pair of real hiking shoes. They are sturdy and cut for support as a low hiker. They are a stiff shoe, but the leather is pliable and they are very comfortable. I hesitated to order them as I've never spent this much money on a pair of athletic shoes, but now I understand the difference between cheaper shoes and these shoes. I wear a size 5, and really wish these came in a Euro size 35 because they are definitely more like a US 5.5 than a 5. But with the right socks they will work out fine for me. Have not tested their "waterproof-ness" yet but they are constructed in a way that makes me think they will perform well in that aspect. As far as style, they are a little chunky, but that is entirely appropriate for their purpose.
Brands I'd also recommend: Merrill, Vasco, Timberland, Patagonia

These shoes are worth the money. I have used them for hiking in the Smoky Mountains, wear them to the dog park, beach walking in the winter. They are sure footed and very comfortable and gortex water proof. Stop trying to decide if they are worth the money and get them.

I stay up at night thinking about this shoe. Unfortunately they didn't have my size! The creme de la creme of hiking shoes. Comfortable the minute you put it on.

I had to replace a favorite pair of hikers because they were starting to fall apart after years of wear (CA, Alaska, CO). So I studied all the photos and characteristics of all the hiking shoes on Zappos, and ordered two different pairs. This one looked better than the rest (although the price was high!). This one also felt better than the other pair I ordered. A roomy toe box is important. Lots of support and comfort are important. These are great shoes! I hope they last a long time! They are a 9-9.5 but did not feel that big -- I usually wear an 8.5 or 9.

Very disappointed and surprised for ecco. Rigid, I have high arches and there was absolutely no arch support for me, heel slips when walking so I had to tie shoe very tight which then hurt top of my foot. They do have a very roomy toe box and were true to size. I had read that they ran a half size small so I ordered up but then had to exchange them for my original size and I still had plenty of room with a lightweight sock. Looks great!
