They look great but... owie =( These shoes look great, but the back cuts into the back of my foot when I walk cuz it's so stiff. If I knew of a way to soften it up, they would probably be my favorite shoes.

I love this shoes :) I bought shoes of Dr Martens 3 years ago. The first month was terrible. I hated this shoe, but when my feet "learnt" Doc Martens, everything changed. Now I wear it very often because they're very comfortable.
Brands I'd also recommend: Doc Maertens :))

Ouch! My friend bought these shoes and said I just had to get a pair. Well I did, and Wow do they hurt the back of my heel! If I knew how to soften them up they would probably be my favorite shoes. But alas, I have scars from the one time I wore them and walked around campus! Ouch!

I love the (OUCH) way they look. I love these shoes. A classic. But the backs of my heels are raw. I can't believe I saw another review that said the same thing. I haven't tried to soften the back edge where it cuts into my foot for fear of ruining them. Anybody have ideas?....that have worked?

About Dr. Martens
Where the classic 1460 style was being used by mailmen, union workers, and factory workers, it soon became popular among the masses. The 1460 continues to thrive, symbolizing individualism, originality, and taps into a individual's unique style who's willing to make that bold statement.
Dr. Martens doesn't think of itself as a "shoe" brand, but rather a way of thinking, a self-expression if you must. Popularly known as Doc Martens, they allow you to feel free to rock your grunge shorts, spike up your hair to the heavens, showoff your body art, whatever floats your boat. So whether you call them Dr. Martens, Doc Martens or just Docs there are no limits to your creativity.

Love Em! I got my first pair of these 9 years ago, I still wear them contstantly. They have still not worn down. I got a replacement pair from Zappos.com this year for Christmas. I'll be keeping my old pair to kick around in too. About the Ouch factor: You really need a good two weeks of wearing them to break your feet in. Once you get to know Doc's, there usually is not a problem. My older ones feel like slippers now. One tip to break in the back of the heel, take them on and off without untying them. I know it sounds bad, but it does loosen them and makes the heel more flexible...

Inner sole broke down in front. The sole inside the shoe under the toes broke down rather deep into some apparent void, leaving a sharp and very uncomfortable edge, about 5 mm away from the wall. They could not be used after that happened. I had used the shoes for about 2 years. They were far from worn down in any other respect at that time. Before this happened the shoes were great, though.

OK let's come to the defense of the 1461! These are Great shoes, comfortable, value for money, ultra stylish. Never had a problem with wearing these in! Would suggest that anyone feeling a twinge of discomfort simply apply a plaster / band aid to the shoe in the corresponding area! I have probably gotten used to Docs footwear and never wear anything else. If you like the shoes you should try the boots - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
Brands I'd also recommend: Boots are a must - so comfortable.

I only have slightly wider-than-normal feet, but these shoes are so narrow I had to get a full size larger which makes them a tad too long. Otherwise, great shoes.

Love them!!!!! I love my docs. I have had about 3 or 4 pairs over the last 8 years and would not trade them for the world. I don't remember the ouch part of them. My husband had a hard time in the beginning though.

Love this shoe! Great shoe! My husband is a physician and wears his continuously. We bought this same shoe two years ago and broke them in walking around London. Haven't had any problems with the heels as some have had. I have narrow feet and without the 1/2 sizes I wear thicker socks with mine. I think the 1461 is a great classic looking shoe.
Brands I'd also recommend: Is there any other type? ;)

Patience. I know most of the reviews include some type of pain story related to wearing Docs. Get over it. You spend the same money on other shoes that don't last half as long as Docs and the little bit of pain factor is worth it. Wear them a little bit at a time until you get used to them. Like all shoes, there will be some discomfort, but once they break in, you never will take them off. I know, I tried buying other shoes and eventually resorted back to Docs.

i dont have these but i tried them on and i know what everyone means about the back. i bought the 8053s and they're great because they have a padded collar, so they dont cut into your foot like the 1461s. other than the padded collar, they look the same as the 1461, so the 8053s may be better for you if the backs of the 1461s are bothering you.

I've been wearing docs for about 12 years and I was warry about getting another pair because of the pain and stiffness factor, but the 8053's with the greasy leather and padded collar were too much to resist. I got them and put an insert in them because they are a little too big, but now they fit like a fluffy marshmallow on my foot. I work in a restaurant and they can take a beating and wipe clean. I stepped on a large chunk of broken glass in the parking lot and I was sure glad I had those bad boys on. I think we will be working alot of shifts together. They look good with any outfit and will always be in style.
Brands I'd also recommend: chuck taylors, suede hush puppies, tred-air, vans,

great versatile shoe. Look, the chicks have been dealing with painful shoes forever without whining! Fact is, if you actually wear them, they will break in nicely in just a few weeks. I wear these shoes every day and I have owned several, they are the best, most versatile shoes I have ever worn. If you want a fashion statement, try Rockport or Timberland or some other silly footwear.
Brands I'd also recommend: Any Doc Marten 3-eye and 4-eye (avoid boots, sandals, etc.)

SOFTENING. This works for any shoe that rubs--put some Vaseline on it! Another trick is to put folded up tissues or something to raise your heel up a bit. It also helps to put Vaseline on your feet at any time you'll be walking a lot to prevent friction. Once the shoes are "broken" you won't need the Vaseline. In a pinch I've used hand cream--anything "greasy".

Best Docs available This is simply the best pair of shoes I have ever owned. They look great, they're very comfortable and my last pair lasted for four years. I just purchased my third pair. Doc Martins rock but this pair is the very best.
