Can any sneaker be worth $300? On the plus side, this shoe is exquisitely well made, a fine example of high-fashion Italian craftsmanship. My problems mainly come from how Zappos presented it. The color is described as "Florida White". What does that mean? The shoes I received were white patent leather. This is fine if that's what you like, but a rude surprise if you weren't. The other problem is with D. Bikkembergs decision to emboss the entire shoe with a stylized version of his 'DB' logo. In the pix, it looks so subtle that you almost don't see it. In person, they are as obvious as welts! My problem is not so much with the shoe, but with how Zappos presented it. In the pictures, this shoe looks like an elegant, tasteful interpretation of the classic plimsoll; sort of like making a hamburger with Kobe beef. It fact, it is a very garish, derivative style that will probably be out of style long before it wears out. It is an over-the-top style that may work on the Cote d'Azure, or the trendiest of South Beach gay bars, but nowhere else. Nicely made shoe, alas very limited in application. Dirk Bikkemburg needs to be reminded that when interpreting classics, less is truly more.
