I bought this for my daughter this year after I bought a similar model for myself last year. We looked last year and no luck, but thankfully Columbia made a kids size one this year. This jacket has the new technology on it, and it is very lightweight and thin. So far it hasn't gotten super cold yet, I am thinking if she is active the silver molecules in the jacket produce more heat, so if she is sledding, she will be fine. For a more still activity I would definitely layer with a fleece underneath, or a scarf. However, this is a great jacket, my daughter loves it. She is 9, and I bought the 10/12, she says it is big but it doesn't look it at all, I hope it holds up through one more season!
