John Varvatos Reviews
These look great. They are little more grey than they appeared in the picture, but great nonetheless. There were a few problems though: 1) The upper is too short in the toe making for a tight fit, 2) Perhaps as a result, walking in the shoes caused my knee to bend differently than normal and hurt quite seriously at the end of a day of wearing them. I have already worn them outside, otherwise I would certainly return them!
These are a very good fit, quality and look. There's not much arch support or cushion, so if that is a problem you may want a half size bigger, so you can get a sole insert with some support.
Really great shoe - very happy with them so far! The chocolate brown color was exactly what I'd been looking for and is very versatile. I have a narrow heel, so I bought a 9 instead of the 9.5 and they fit just right. The suede is nice and soft so no issues with the top part of the neck rubbing against my ankle like I have read about some people having with Chukkas. I actually had to return the first pair because, while the box had the correct color listed on the outside, the shoes inside were actually the grey color (which also looked very nice). The return process was super easy and painless and I got the replacement pair in just a couple of days. Keep up the great work Zappos!
My Wife bought me these shoes as a Christmas present. I really love these shoes. They look sleek and were extremely comfortable. It rained the Tuesday after Christmas and the shoes took in water. I was really surprised haviong bought over 100 pairs of shoes and none of them that were built like these took in water. We returned the shoes without any problem, and got another pair in the same style. The second pair also took in water. The manufacturer took them back, so I am looking at other shoe companies to find replacements, but I am having a difficult time finding any. I do not know if these shoes are not to be worn when in the rain, or if there was a problem with this batch, or because they just did not pay attention to the quality.
There is no metal brand on the belt. The peace sign just imprinted on it!
Very nice looking shoe. Lived in look that goes well for just about any occasion. Sole is a bit stiffer than I expected, but still comfortable.
These shoes were exactly a half size too large... luckily I ordered a half size smaller than I am, and they fit like a glove. I have normal width feet and found these to be quite tight/narrow when I first put them on... but after wearing them around they loosened and now feel alright. Do note: You can't tell on the website but there is a really tacky little peace sign image on the side of these. Not my style at all, but hardly noticeable.
Great looking boot! The clay is a dark brown and for me runs a half size too big. Once I got the right size, and after putting an orthotic insert in, I can now say they are comfy. Not great if you are on your feet all day though!
This price for shoes Made in China?? Since Zappos unfortunately does not seem willing to put country of origin in the product description, we're forced to guess. Well, if I pay this much for a pair of shoes, I expected them to be made in a country where the labor rate is pretty low an hour. US, Italy, Spain Brazil etc. John Varvatos is hosing us here. They're nice looking shoes and seem to be made okay but let's face it, the bulk of the cost in a pair of shoes is labor. These shoes are a ripoff at this price given that they are made at slave labor rates.
Other reviews suggested that this shoe comes large, so I ordered a size down. Putting the shoe on required me to slip my finger between my foot and the shoe, then vigorously shove my foot inside. You won't fly through airport security with this shoe. Once inside, the fit was snug and comfortable, leaving just enough toe room. The side of the shoe hugged against my foot a little too tightly, though I suspect it would stretch because it's leather. Overall comfort was pretty good. The shoe's sole was rubber and fabric, which I imagine could wear easily and either look terrible or terribly interesting after time. Personally, this shoe didn't fit my style preferences, and for this price, I feel like the right shoe should, so I returned it.
If you want comfort, don't ask a hipster. You can't go wrong asking a hipster about the latest fashion and music so it was with that eye toward trendiness that lead me to these shoes. But skinny leg jeans, Pabst bear, and itchy beards? No thank you. Hipsters eschew the comforts of this world. The problems all reside in the sole. It may not look like it, but that's a very thin sole. If you are spending your day in a coffee shop writing a blog, that may not be a problem but I bought these shoes for walking about 5 miles a day. I did my research, and the chukka evolved from WWII desert boots, so I thought they would be comfortable over long distances, but I was wrong. But that's not the worst part. The sole is rounded, so the full force of your step lands in the squishy part of the ball of your foot. Two months in, there's already a nice bald spot on my shoe from all the wear that crosses the very center of the shoe, instead of evenly distributing the weight across your foot like nature intended. It's entirely possible that this review is for the Chukka style and not specifically this shoe. Since I managed to buy this shoe without any low ratings, I had to be that guy. Enjoy your fixie, hipster; I'm going back to a real shoe.
I love these boots but I rarely wear them. This is because the heals are hollow sounding so when you walk in them they make the very loud sounds of women's heels. People always give them looks, but only to see where all the noise is coming from. I am considering having them resoled with a more modern rubber sole.
Roomy; shearling uppers really warm and comfortable. Sole felt surprisingly light; definitely not for rough hiking; clearly a city kicker.
I get more compliments on these boots. They had a short break in period. They were a little tight on the top of the foot when I first tried them on. They broke in in one day and fit perfectly. Very cool looking.
These have been great shoes. They are a little more faded/distressed than in the pictures. This makes them a casual shoe, but that is what I wanted.
I have found my new favorite chukka. Initially the size I ordered felt too snug in the instep, but after one wearing they molded to my feet and are now totally comfortable. The price was right so I think I might order some other colors. Only concern is cleaning them: the light khaki suede on the upper picks up a lot of dark marks from just regular walking. Once I find a good safe product or technique to clean these, I'll be even more pleased with the purchase.
These things are not only stylish - they're very comfortable! The tread design on the bottom is very cool but it does wear off on the heel and ball of your foot as you break them in...but not a showstopper for me. I normally wear a size 10, but the 9.5 fit me much better.

Overall: Comfort: Style:
This is a very versatile tote that's quite roomy with several inside pockets. Probably too big if you're looking to use it as a purse although a purse certainly could fit inside if you also need to pack your lunch and a magazine. My only complaint (and why I gave it 4 stars overall) is that the top zipper isn't secure: there's a finger's length of space on both sides. I prefer that zippers close securely. But if you like a touch of McQueen without the high price, it's a great buy.
