During the 1980's, Anuschka® handbags founder, Swapan Basu, chanced upon the opportunity to make hand painted accessories; he quickly accepted and sought the help of his best friend and wife, Roma. In 1984 she began designing Anushcka's® signature hand painted bags, all the while developing and refining the method of painting over the years. Today, the perfected process used on their handbags is a closely guarded family secret. Their son, Bhaskar, wanted to keep the family business alive, and through his vision, Basu Corporation was founded and in the year 2000 sold its first Anuschka® handbag. Bhaskar encouraged the use of bold new designs to push the handbag company into mainstream fashion.

Given the extent of the process used, it was hard to find artists that were willing to spend hours in a factory painting these elaborate designs on handbags. When faced with the challenge, Anuschka's® co-founder, Roma, set out to look for unemployed youths with a basic sense of art and an eagerness to make an honest living. Through her search she recruited a handful of boys and girls who were either unemployed, socially backward or barely making minimum wage. Today, Anuschka® continues to afford these young artists the chance to make a good living and provide for their family through painting handbags.
