Altra was unknown to me before I bought my new shoes from Zappos. With the Zero Drop technology I think I have found my new favorite shoe. I have known for quite a while that I had a mid foot strike when running but was unaware that there were shoes made specifically for my running style. The fit is odd with all the extra room in the toe box but I am starting to adjust and get familiar with my 'different fitting' shoes. I finished a nine mile training run yesterday with no problem other than my calves hurting. I don't know if that was the zero drop that caused that or me playing around with the Chi Running technique I antsy got introduced to.

I'm 50, and a moderate runner. I have arthritis in one of my big toes. 'Normal' shoes pull my big toe inward, and cause me to favor the opposite foot and leg. This threw off my gait and I started getting joint strain, which I've never had. I tried lots of shoes, but they were all the same. So these Altra's were the last attempt before I hung up my shoes for good. They have worked for me. The toe box allows your toes to splay out naturally. The shoes also force you into a more 'lean-forward' running position. It's a different way of running, and your forefoot ends up hitting the ground with your knees in a slightly bent position, thus absorbing shock naturally, instead of through the big cushy heel of the normal 'lean-back'-'heel-strike' kind of shoe. You definitely 'toe-off' more with these shoes, and I worried this would bother the arthritis in my big-toe, but it doesn't. All the hype about these zero-drop shoes is true, in my opinion. My toe is not bothering me. I am running with no joint strain. I'm sold on these shoes. And I didn't have any problem adjusting to this new way of running, as some are saying. You get stiff in different areas - more in your calves, and other areas. But I adjusted quickly. It feels right.

I'd also recommend: olukai casual shoes

Mixed Review: I loved these shoes after one month that I ordered another pair (very wide toe, comfortable, zero drop for good feel on trail). I trail run once a week. However, after two months, the rubber on the toe and sides of shoe was peeling away, and worst of all, the structure of the shoe where the inner heel hits the shoe began to chafe. The Atra Zero Drop will not last (my Brooks Pure Cadence 3, bought simultaneously are still going strong). And avoid if you have a narrow heel.

I'd also recommend: Brooks Pure Cadence 3

Having a hard time finding a minimalist, zero-drop shoe that still offers a touch of cushioning from the world underfoot? You simply haven’t encountered the Torin 1.5 Running Shoe. Altra’s Torin 1.5 neutral running shoe embraces the idea of minimalist design without shortchanging you on cushioning or comfort. I didn't fall head over heels for the first generation Torin. But what a difference a year makes. While Altra left the essence of the shoe alone in the 1.5, it feels like a completely refreshed running experience. Breathable air mesh goes from the tips of your toes the back of your heel for an improved fit while also allowing air to flow freely through the shoes to keep those hard working feet cool and comfortable. The new upper also feels more flexible and lends a nice aesthetic to the this next generation Torin. The combination of the Natural Ride System (NRS) and FootPod Outsole provide ample feedback from the road while following the anatomy of the human foot, minimizing any external influence from the shoe on your gait. If you're looking for a ride that gives you the benefits of the zero drop experience without dropping you right to the concrete then you should check out the Torin 1.5.

I got my Torin 1.5s as a requested birthday present from my wife. They fit better than I thought they would with me having a high arch and narrow, flat foot. While they are wide in the toe box, the rest of they fit my narrow foot well. I'm a neutral runner who is just now realizing the benefits of zero drop shoes. I'm working my way into them but having put up 13 miles in them, and I'm thrilled. They aren't as light as the Altra One2 but are made to be more substantial for longer distances from what I can tell. My feet absolutely LOVE these shoes! My toes have room to spread out but they don't move round. The cushioning is slightly firm but perfect for longer distances. As for performance, this is a great high mileage trainer or marathon+ distance shoe. As for the zero drop design, do yourself a favor and make sure your cadence is high. (The faster your steps, the less impact they have on your body and the more efficiently you run.) I would also advise that people moving to zero drop shoes do it gradually. For me it's a better, faster, more efficient way to run but you can't switch from 8+mm shoes to zero drop instantly. Altra has some great suggestions on form, cadence and transition on their website. Overall they make quality shoes and the Torin 1.5 is no different.
