I have been waiting very patiently for this more cushioned Altra trail shoe, and now I have it. Ran my first trail run on this shoe and it felt good (I had ran on treadmill and worn them around to break them in a bit). I was a little skeptical before the 13 mi., 2000' trail run, but after the first hour I was sold on this shoe. The extra padding is really nice to have on these longer runs, and the wider toe box helps to improved forefoot comfort. After the run my legs felt great, and feet didn't have the beat up feeling that I sometimes experience with less cushy shoes. If you're looking for a sleek looking shoe, this isn't it. The Olympus looks bulky, and is relatively heavy in comparison to Hokas, but it delivers some really nice results on the trail (and when you're running for 6+ hours, who really cares what you look like?). One drawback for me is the fact the outsole isn't very aggressive, I would prefer an off road trail running tread like on the Altra Lone Peak model. I never run with gaiters, so I don't care about the gaiter traps on the back, but for those who do I'm sure that it comes in handy. I'm looking forward to wearing this on longer run, and see how it performs?

I'd also recommend: Hokas

I am a huge Altra fan for starters. Initially, the cantilevered toe feels strange, and walking around feels strange, but once you get to a run, these are amazing! While they don't have the aggressive traction of the Lone Peak's, they stand up well to many surfaces including pavement well. In my first two 5k's I ran 1.5min/mile faster than my usual pace, and on trail I am quicker by 1min/mile. After 13 miles my feet still felt brand new. These are my new racing training shoes for all but the most technical terrain.

I'd also recommend: Altra

First: It was a Zappos agent that directed me to consider buying this model of Altra, including the size I decided on. He was spot on! Thank you so much! Now the Altra Zero: This shoe is exactly what I needed to do cross-fit type exercises in spite of having older, weaker knees. I have good mobility and balance with them plus jumping and landing feels even more comfortable than when wearing two other brands that use sole-imbedded springs to reduce impact.

I'm far from a world-class runner, but I run a few miles every day, and have raced in many 5Ks, 10Ks, three half-marathons, and a couple marathons in the past few years. My feet seem to give me the most trouble, and seem to get sore or wear out faster than my legs, so I've been looking for something with more cushioning to see if that would help. I'm of average size -- 5'10", between 180 and 185 pounds. I've spent serious time on everything from cheap New Balances, to Nike Pegasuses (decent), to Mizuno Wave Riders (light, but least cushioning) before taking the Altra plunge. I'm glad I did. The Altra Olympus provides tons of cushion, without feeling like a moon boot. It has a very wide toe box, which is something I prefer. The overall look is semi-clunky/dorky, but definitely not something obnoxious like a Hoka One (I've only seen Hokas on others though). You could wear the Altras in public without feeling like everyone is going to be staring at your shoes. I find them very good for road running, but doubt I'll try them too much on the trail (not that I do too much trail running). They don't have an aggressive tread, and the higher stance does make me a little more apt to roll an ankle. Nothing terrible though. Some would probably find them fine for a trail shoe. I wear 10.5s pretty much across the board, but found these a little large. Most of that is probably due to the extra toe room, which I like. I'll probably buy 10.0s, when (likely) I buy another pair someday. All told, I'm a believer. I plowed through a half-marathon in the Altras less than week after receiving them, without doing much in the way of training before the race. My feet held up very well.

The most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I use to get knee and back pain working in my studio on the concrete floor - not anymore. Have been great for hiking. Breathe well. Worry about getting wet in cold weather though. Wish they would come out with more neutral colors.
