This shoe rejects style of all kinds, defiantly embracing its own ugliness. The inexplicable disco matrix background is adorned with a choice of rivaling ugly 1990s color trims. The lacing design refuses to flatter the foot from any angle, while un-intelligently redistributing lace tension to wherever the foot is widest. The curious soft neoprene tongue disappears completely when the shoe is fully laced to the top hole, and the shoe is trimmed out with more little brand names than a drift racer’s Subaru. But, what the Adidas Terrex Scope lacks in… everything it makes up for in very specific scrambling/bouldering qualities: rigidity and stickiness. It is virtually impossible to flex by hand, and the stiffness in the sole rivals bicycle cleats. So, when standing on the balls of your feet the shoe provides a lot of lift to the rest of your feet. The Terrex Scope’s stickiness borders on freakish. Although “Stealth” is not the best name for the sole technology because it squeaks like crazy on virtually all man made surfaces, collects dirt - which it re-distributes if damp. Ex: you have walked into a bathroom with a few wet spots, and then you leave a trail – and sounds like you are walking in golf or football shoes. When clean, the shoe has the sensation that you have stepped in juice, the shoes literally stick to the floor. This shoe does squarely address an issue I have with many of my boots: soft mid soles always getting torn up on rocks. The addition of ADIPRENE – which I know because it is emblazoned on the side - provides a rugged exterior to the side wall of the midsole, which promises longer term durability. The Scope is a long shoe, but the toe box is a bit confining, so it seems true to size. The arch support is nonexistent. A narrow foot may want to consider ½ size smaller. A normal width foot can fit true to size. Wide feet will likely be unhappy with this shoe in any size. There is not a lot of room for orthotics in this shoe. This is not a light hiker or trail runner with a nod to climbing. This is a scrambling and bouldering shoe that is meant to work on rocks. If all you are doing is bouldering you may regard this shoe as a rare monsterpiece. If you are considering it for a combination of hiking and bouldering it may be too overly specific to bouldering for you. These are shoes for the shoe person. Although they are not the best all day hikers, they are great as a hybrid climbing/ bouldering shoe. They do seem to run a bit larger so be sure to order a size smaller, especially cause rock shoes should fit really snug anyways. I would buy them again.

I currently own the Adidas Fast X GTX and after really being very impressed by this shoe I decided to give these a try. I was looking for something a little more rigid and trail focused. The buyer of this shoe must know that these shoes are for what Adidas calls "alpine approach" scenarios meaning the person who wears these shoes needs a good stiff, water resistant, breathable, and ultra grip shoe that can get you through the toughest outdoor mountain/rocky trail scenarios. These shoes are not trail runners and are extremely stiff. They offer excellent foot protection and the gusseted tongue really helps in keeping a lot of debris out when you are on the trails. The ankle support is decent and considering my ankles are not the greatest, I felt quite confident while on the trail. I recently did an 8 mile day hike in these through some hilly and rocky areas. These shoes performed quite well and I felt the shoe could easily take much more extreme conditions and rockier trail scenarios. The shoe feels balanced, rigid, and grips extremely well on any rock surface thanks to the "Stealth" grip technology (sometimes too well). The technology and design that went into this shoe has won awards as I have heard and considering how new Adidas is in the outdoor hiking market I have been very impressed by what they have been doing. I really like the goretex membrane and the fact that if I go through some snow cover and small streams getting my feet wet will not be a problem. Some outdoor shoes can act as a hybrid for those wanting to wear these on the trail as well as in the office but I feel this shoe is not geared for this type of use. When you put them on you can immediately feel that Adidas meant for this shoe to be strictly used on the trail due to its rigidness and protection. Having this shoe as a daily driver in my opinion would not be a good choice. If you are looking for more of a hybrid shoe look at the Adidas Fast X/GTX model as its more sneaker like a little more forgiving if you decide to wear them in the office. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and love the direction Adidas is going with their Terrex line. I noticed this shoe has been a very under reviewed shoe online and decided to give my input to help you guys out a bit.

These approach shoes are amazing. I don't think they should be considered for running because they are pretty stiff. The size chart from Adidas is accurate for this shoe and can be found at the brand's website. I would highly recommend using this size chart over one's normal Adidas size or the Zappos.com size chart. The shoes have performed well around water so far. The rubber on the toe seems stiffer than my climbing shoes and if sized properly, I bet you could crank out some 5.10s. Overall, these shoes are amazing.

I love the styling of the shoe and the Gore-Tex waterproofing. They were a little more stiff in the sole than I thought but that provides excellent support. I'm hoping they will loosen up a little like any good boot and not feel so stiff in the sole. I have only worn them 5 or 6 days so far. The soles have good traction and I have even worn them on the golf course.
