Make V-Day Personal Again With Heartfelt Cards And Crafts

Written with heart Tia Zuniga & Trish Christoffersen

When I was a little girl, I always thought Valentine’s Day was the coolest holiday of the year (except for Christmas — nothing was going to beat Christmas!) My Mom would take me to the store to buy Sweethearts candy and a box of pre-made Valentine cards. You know, those little cards with superheroes and princesses that you passed out to all of your school friends? And you’d get a stack of the same cards back because everyone went to the same store.

Well, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be cookie cutter anymore! Take a look at these heartfelt crafts (made of felt, of course) that you can make for your kids’ classmates, or for that special someone you want to feel extra loved!

Pop-Up Bouquet

Zappos Crafts

What You’ll Need:

Cardstock or craft paper
Felt pieces
Scissors
Adhesive (spray adhesive, hot glue, craft glue)
Tissue paper, buttons, and burlap (optional)

Here’s How:

1.) Start by stacking two equal-sized pieces of craft paper. If one side of the paper you’re using is blank, stack them so both blank sides are touching.
2.) Fold your stack in half to create the form of a card. Next, remove the inner most piece.
3.) Using your scissors, make two equal length cuts about one inch apart anywhere along the fold.
4.) Push the rectangular section “into” the card and refold. This will create a pop-up effect.
5.) Continue doing this until you are satisfied with the amount of pop-ups your card has.
6.) Re-insert and glue the inner part of the card to the outer shell. Spray adhesive works best for this step.
7.) Let dry! We all know waiting is the hardest part, but you want to leave ample time for the glue to set.
8.) While waiting, cut out your felt pieces and prep the décor for your pop-ups. For Valentines Day, flowers and hearts are surely a safe bet.
9.) If you plan on writing anything in your card, now’s the time to do so. Next, glue on the décor and allow it to dry.
10.) Lastly, dazzle up the front of the card with a satin ribbon bow to keep the card closed.

No-Sew Heart Pillows

What You’ll Need:

6” x 6” felt pieces
Marker
Ribbon
Scissors
Stapler
Precision knife
Filling (candy, small gifts, gift card, jewelry, tissue paper)

Here’s How:

1.) Using a black marker, draw as big of a heart as you can on one piece of felt.
2.) Cut out using scissors.
3.) Trace the heart onto another piece of felt and cut out.
4.) Staple your two pieces together in the center (this will be removed later).
5.) Using your sharp object and a lot of care, begin poking holes along the perimeter of the heart.
6.) Thread the ribbon through the bottom most point/hole until lengths are equal on both sides. You may need to use a pen or pencil to push the ribbon through.
7.) Keep lacing the ribbon through until you reach the curved part of the heart.
8.) Remove the center staple.
9.) Add your goodies or fluff with filling!
10.) Continue lacing and finish with a bow.
11.) Lastly, give it to someone you care about and watch as they swoon over your “heart-felt” gesture.

Love Monster Gift Boxes

Zappos Crafts

What You’ll Need:

2” x 2” x 2” favor boxes
6” x 6” felt pieces
Spray adhesive
Hot glue
Googly eyes
String, yarn or pompoms (optional)

Here’s How:

1.) Assemble the favor boxes, if they aren’t already.
2.) Measure, mark and cut your piece of felt into 1 – 2” x 6” strip and 3 – 2” x 2” square pieces.
3.) Spray the felt strip with adhesive. Adhere to one side of the box and wrap completely around to the other side. This piece should cover the bottom and two sides.
4.) Next, adhere the felt squares to the remaining sides and top.
5.) Using more felt, cut out the features for your monsters. Dots, bow ties, mouths and hearts work splendidly.
6.) Grab the kiddos and let them customize their love monsters. They can add googly eyes and loosely stick their felt features on until an adult adheres them with hot glue.
7.) Fill the boxes with candies or small trinkets. If you’re feeling extra crafty, make enough for your child’s class. You can be sure no one else will be handing out the same Valentines.
